Frequently Asked Questions
Product Questions
What kind of wood do you use?
All of our shelves (Horizontal Surfaces) are made with Select Solid Pine from the Pacific Northwest. All Uprights, Cross Rails, Drawer Fronts, Doors, Component Rails (Vertical Surfaces) are made with Select Solid Hemlock also from the Pacific Northwest. We use Hemlock as it has little to no knots and is much harder than pine. Pine and Hemlock are associated wood species that share the same grain patterns and tone. All of our lumber comes from FSC Certified Green Forests. We use several sources for our Pine and Hemlock including the Collins 96,000 acre Lakeview Forest in Klamath County Order, the 94,000 acre Almanor Forest tucked into the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Northern California and Sierra Pacific Industries Timberlands in Whatcom, Skagit and Snohomish counties of Washington State. Our lumber is harvested in these forests using "Single Tree Selection". Typically, the harvest is only 2 to 4 trees that are hand selected per acre of forest. This is the most responsible method of harvesting trees. In addition to protecting the forest, this type of forestry also protects wildlife.
What type of finish material do you use?
We use Sherwin Williams LOW VOC Water based finishes in our clear and tinted finish options. We have complete specifications in our Material Safety Data Sheets section if you want more details.

Yes, our "Unfinished" option, will come sanded smooth. It may age faster than a clear or tinted finish and show dust easier over time, but it will be just as durable. Currently, there is more than 250,000 lineal feet of "Unfinished" Lundia Closets Systems in Macy's, JC Penny, Ann Taylor, Polo Ralph Lauren, Cost Plus World Market and Pier One Import store stockrooms being use to hold their merchandise. Many of these installations are well over 20 years old.
Is Unfinished ready to be stained or painted?
Our "Unfinished" option, will come sanded smooth. However, you will most likely still want to do some additional prep work if you are going to add a new finish to it. This may include finer sanding and removal of any residue dust.
How much weight can each shelf hold?
A single 24"wide shelf can hold well over 500 lbs!!! Try that with melamine or particle board. The fact is, in over 50 years of manufacturing Lundia shelving and in over 10,000 commercial installations, we've never seen a single shelf break. If a shelf is overloaded you might see a deflection. For most bookcases, typically any 24", 30" or 36" wide shelf will not deflect. Our 42" and 48" shelves may bow slightly if they are overloaded. General Questions
Is Lundia USA the same Lundia I purchased in Europe or at the Container Store?
We do share the same brand and construction methods. However, I’m sorry our products do not interchange in any way. Our Lundia USA is made in inches and Skandia (Lundia from Europe) is made in centimeters. You are welcome to create an entirely new section from us and set it up nearby. It will look very close to what you have….it just won’t fit any of your Skandia shelving. Heights, depths and widths will all be slightly different.
What is your Warranty?
Not only is our warranty a Lifetime Warranty, our product is truly built to last you a lifetime. You won’t find a more time tested product than Lundia. We have commercial and retail installations going back over half a century in time. Our product can be found in well over 10,000 commercial installations throughout America since the 1960's. There is so much Lundia in the U.S. that there is a used market for Lundia. Just go to eBay and type in "Lundia" and see for yourself. Most of this product is at least 25 years old when we only offered in a clear finish or unfinished.
