What 9-Inch Deep Shelving Is Best For
9″ is Lundia’s slimline depth — designed for places where deeper shelving simply won’t fit. Hallway walls, narrow stair landings, alcoves, and the awkward depth-limited corners of older closets are all natural fits. At 9″ depth Lundia holds:
- Small books — paperbacks, mass-market novels, magazines, journals.
- Small shoes — flats, slip-ons, sneakers, sandals. (Boots and larger shoes need 12″ or deeper.)
- Small accessories — framed photos, small storage boxes, decor objects, baskets.
- Behind-the-door storage — the perfect depth to fit between a swing door and the wall it opens against.
What 9-Inch Doesn’t Do
9″ is purpose-built for slim spaces, so a few things don’t fit at this depth:
- No hanging clothes — Lundia does not offer hang bars at 9″. For hanging, see 15″ or deeper.
- No drawers — Lundia drawers start at 15″ depth.
- No oversized books or large shoes — coffee-table books, photo albums, and large boots will overhang the front edge. For those, use 12″.
How to Configure a 9-Inch Deep System
9″ Lundia builds from four solid-wood components:
- Starter Frames — The base upright structure. Sets the height and width of your installation.
- Add-On Frames — Extend a starter frame in 1-foot increments to span any wall length.
- Standard Shelves — Adjustable on a peg system at any height. Solid wood. The workhorse component.
- Display Shelves — Angled shelves for showing off books, decor, and small objects.
9″ vs. Other Lundia Depths
If your wall is narrower than 12″, 9″ is your only option. With more depth available, here’s where each Lundia depth shines:
- 9″ deep — Hallways, narrow walls, behind-the-door — small books and small shoes.
- 12″ deep — The most popular depth for full-size bookcases, pantries, and shoe racks. No hanging or drawers.
- 15″ deep — The closet industry’s most popular depth. Full hanging, drawers, and accessory racks.
- 18″ deep — Extra shelf and drawer space. Doors over pants and smaller hanging items.
- 24″ deep — Closets and wardrobes with doors over all hanging garments.

What’s the narrowest wall a 9-inch system can fit?
Width is independent of depth — we build 9″ deep frames as narrow as 12 inches wide. So even a tight hallway niche can take a Lundia system. Only the front-to-back depth has to be at least 9 inches.
Can I add hanging clothes to a 9-inch deep system?
No — hanging clothes require at least 15″ depth, because shoulders need clearance behind the front edge of the frame. For hanging, see 15″, 18″, or 24″.
Will a 9-inch shelf hold a row of paperbacks?
Yes, easily. Mass-market paperbacks are about 7 inches tall and 4–5 inches deep, so they fit cleanly with no overhang. Hardcover books typically need 12″ depth.
